The construction of a suburban rail terminal at the airport was an obligation of the Athens International Airport S.A. (AIA). OBERMEYER was appointed for the consultancy services, comprising both technical / functional requirements and schematic design.
The project dealt with diverse design parameters, such as:
- goals and objectives, such as flexibility, compatibility, operational efficiency, aesthetic values and accessibility
- the site, in terms of size, morphology, orientation, climate, neighbouring structures and functions
- design language
- specifications regarding function, such as building climate, commercial services, operational and security considerations
- specifications regarding capacity
- specifications regarding space allocation
- passenger flow calculations
- applicable standards, codes and regulation
A number of alternative considerations were presented and evaluated:
- track layout
- platform operation
- access mode
- baggage trolley operation
- vertical connection of levels
The recommended plan introduced design principles, specified the arrangement of space and the access mode, proposed an architectural language of transparency and motion through the choice of form, materials and colours. Capacity calculations as well as a cost estimate completed the project.
